Washington - A top Pentagon general came under fire for statements he made in speeches at evangelical churches casting the war on terrorism in religious terms.
In several speeches, Army Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin said that the real enemy wasn’t Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden, but Satan. Addressing a Christian organization in Oregon in June, Boykin said that America was hated by groups like al-Qaida “because we’re a Christian nation, because our foundation and roots are Judeo-Christian. ... And the enemy is a guy named Satan.”
Talking about a 1993 battle with a muslim warlord in Somalia on a different occasion, the general said, “I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real god and his was an idol.”
General Boykin is also being criticized for saying that God put George W. Bush in the White House, affirming the biblical truth that “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will” (Dan. 2:20-21; Dan. 4:17).
Such rhetoric is anathema in 21st century western civilization, where the Almighty God of the Bible has been replaced by “the almighty dollar,” and the true and undefiled Christian religion by pluralism and political correctness.
Critics expressed their concern that the general’s remarks could serve to undermine more than two years of work by the Bush Administration to foster good relations with muslims, particularly in America. An oft-quoted Bible verse states, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). The reality is that Islamist governments and non-government agencies have declared war (jihad) on the U.S. Deny it though one may, that fact has proven itself to be true.
Lt. Gen. Boykin knows this, but most of all he knows the Lord Jesus. Although he now finds himself under tremendous pressure to justify himself - while pressure also mounts to force his resignation - yet he remains “a soldier who has an abiding faith.”
The enemy, Satan, has a vast arsenal which is not limited to the jihadist Islamic warriors. Even here, in the land of the free and home of the brave, there are many who fight against the worship of the Most High. They are making the same mistake that Somalian warlord Osman Otto made, and they will soon learn the truth that Gen. Boykin told him upon his capture: “You underestimated our God.”
