The Sharp Two-edged Sword

By Zena McNabb

Psalms 149:5,6 says, “Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand.”

Have you ever wondered about this two-edged sword? We are told in Hebrews 4:12 that it is the Word of God. We need to understand why he says it is two-edged, and how we can use His Word (the Bible) to be a better soldier for Him.

Even as you have to study and be trained to use a weapon in the natural, it is also necessary to study and train in God’s word so we can fight our spiritual battle against the enemies of God. We are told in 2 Corinthians 10:4 that our weapons are not carnal. But we must put on the whole armour of God that we may be able to stand, and once we are fitted and ready for battle against the devil and darkness of this world, we must have the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God (Ephesians 6).

So why does the Sword of God have two edges? Jesus said in John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” He is letting us know that eternal life is in the scriptures, and also the testimony of Jesus. We are told in Revelation 19:10 that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. So we can readily see that the two edges of this sword is Salvation and Prophecy. Jesus came and fulfilled all prophecy concerning Himself, and that is how He proved He was the very Christ, the Son of God (Luke 24:27,44). There is Salvation only in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:10-12), and in order to have the testimony of Jesus, we must also have the Spirit of Prophecy.

The Word of God is a sword, a sharp two-edged sword.
With this weapon we shall fight the enemies of our Lord.
One edge is Salvation, the other is Prophecy.
If we learn to use our Sword, we’ll share in God’s victory.
